Jeddah Corniche, KSA

Corniche Shade Pavilion

A perforated steel canopy along the Jeddah waterfront.

Lead architect — O+

The corniche is unusable for half the year because there is nothing between the body and the sun. The proposal is the simplest possible answer: one continuous shade plate, perforated to filter the light, raised just high enough to keep the sea air moving underneath.

The column grid is set out at 4.8 m — wide enough to walk a family through, narrow enough to make the canopy feel like a room.
