Al-Balad Reading Room

The proposal accepts that Al-Balad’s coral-stone shells have outlived their original interiors many times over. A new timber lattice slides inside the existing walls, doing the work of floor, shelving, and shade.

The roshan is preserved as the building’s climate machine — its perforations are tuned in section to draw the breeze through the reading floor in the afternoon.
